Hard work is worthy of praise

Recently Physical Plant has received numerous positive comments for the current shape of the grounds and the landscaping. We take great pride in the physical appearance of our campus and appreciate the kind words. The condition of our building and grounds provide the first impression for visitors of our campus. And with today’s competition for students it is important that what they see when they visit provide a positive and inviting environment.

Keeping up with the grounds and the landscaping has been a challenge over the years.  There is a tremendous amount of maintenance required and a lot of the campus was not designed with maintenance in mind. We have worked hard over the last few years to replace high maintenance areas with lower maintenance items. We also tried something a little radical last year. We empowered our grounds department to take responsibility for areas of the campus.

The campus was divided into several areas and teams of grounds members were responsible for their own areas. If they saw something that needed to be done in their area they were empowered to do it. This change is structure created a sense of pride and ownership in each area. It was amazing to see the energy that everyone put into making their areas better. And that energy has continued and grown over the past year and created a desire to continuously improve the entire campus.

Please join me in recognizing and thanking the Physical Plant employees who are responsible for the ongoing grounds improvements and maintenance that is a year-round job. (A wrap up of other — many major — campus improvement projects undertaken this summer will be included in the Fall 2017 All College Meeting program on Sept. 18.)

Our Grounds Department is overseen by Larry Lavigne and is made up of the following personnel:

Jay Bonesteel, supervisor
Bill Bellard
Capone Brown, work study
Jim Carras
John Keyoskey
Josh Palmer
Marty Sloan
Kyle Spiak

If you see the guys out and about and want to make a suggestion, please say something.
